I started this series having just cut my hair into a mohawk as a way to identify with my two sons; one who had left home for college and one just about to. It was in defiance of my having to let them go. My little rebellion of becoming an empty nester, however slow the process. I began to see my sons in the occasional face of someone sportin' a mohawk on the streets...a reminder of them or lack thereof in my immediate presence.

Its arresting to see a face, though foreign and unfamiliar, become recognizable and familiar. Hence my obsession to document time, location, identity and familiarity by documenting the people that I encounter in life and on the web.

I am also increasingly interested in the idea of exchange as part of my process. So if you would like to contribute to the project…I will produce a small study in exchange for your participation. You will need to cut your hair in a mohawk. No set form…just your version of a mohawk. Take some good digital pics (straight forward like these paintings) and email 15-20 of them to me. I will use them to create a study for you…and a final painting to be added to this series. Your time and energy and willingness in exchange for a sketch.

Want to participate? I am looking for: Punk rock mohawks, colored and dyed, standing 12 inches spiked, 270 degree hawk, death-hawks, liberty spikes, beavers, dread-hawks, emo-hawks, bi-hawks or twin fins, blow-hawks, fanned, side hawks, slant-hawks, glow hawks, chelsea hawk, cross hawk, indian feather, hawk by hair clip (not really a mohawk…but pushed up and gathered in a row), butch, shaved, crew,hair-blown, corn-rowed,…you get the picture right?

Spread the word, re-post on your sites and direct people my way.

If you are sportin’ a mohawk…lemme hear from you.

Sometimes When I Watch Mr. Squarepants...I think About The American Gothic: Aficionado Series
60" x 72"
Oil on canvas

aficionado - enthusiast - collector - connoisseur

I am looking for couples (spouses, partners, mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, friends, etc) to model for a series of portraits wearing attire that references the pop culture that they are curious about, collect, admire, and are obsessed or passionate about...however mildly or strongly.

R U dressing up for Halloween?

So if any of your are dressing up this year...make sure you document your "get up" with some straight up, dead pan, mugshot photos of you in your Halloween costumes.  Single and couple shots.  At some point it will work into my "fauxREAL" series. Email me your pics. Model your pose after my work.  Face forward, hands buy your side, well lit, good details, straight faced (no smiles/emotions).

Mohawk Triptych
(self with my two sons)
24" x 24" each
Oil on canvas
2011

I started this set as a way to identify w my two sons as they are maturing and moving forward in their lives becoming young men. But I began to think that it would make an impressive series. I am increasingly interested in the idea of exchange as part of my process. So if you would like to contribute to the project...I will produce a small charcoal study in exchange for your participation. You will need to cut your hair in a mohawk. No set form...just your variation of a mohawk. Take a good digital pic of it (straight forward like these paintings). I will use it to create a charcoal study for you...and a final painting to be added to this series. Your time and energy and willingness in exchange for a drawing. Want to participate? Email me at matthewivancherry@yahoo.com

Ladies...you are welcome too by the way.

Punk rock mohawks, colored and dyed, standing 12 inches spiked, 270 degree hawk, death-hawk, liberty spikes, beaver, dread=hawks, emohawks, mollet hawks, bi-hawks or twin fins, blowhawk, fanned, side hawks, slant hawks, glow hawks, chelsea hawk, cross hawk, indian feather, hawk by hair clip (not really a mowhawk...but pushed up and gathered in a row), butch, shaved, crew, hairblown, corn-rowed...and yes, faux-hawks.  You get the picture right??

Spread the word. Re-post on your sites and direct people my way. Thanks!

a cactUS EXCHANGE between YOU and ME...u-cactUS-me...you, me, we and a cactus

SO...I want to start a new series of cacti & succulents. If you send me a cacti (or have it delivered) I will produce a fine charcoal portrait of it just for you. The gnarl-i-er or funkier the better! Old twisty spiny ones, bulbous sexy succulents, spindly phallic funky things, dry dessert growths, knobby stickery suckers, small or large...send me your desert flora. We'll consider it an exchange.  Contact me and I will send you a mailing address.

A Sort of Homecoming

I spent the week in Cape Cod and came home and read Allisa Cherry's recent entry in her blog. While I loved the sea...and sand...and air...and collected white rocks that had been ground to a beautiful irregularity...and came home to Boston put them in all of my little cacti pots in my apt...reading her blog made me miss my Arizona home more than ever.  And while I love my little cacti...surrounded by the rocks still smelling of the sea..I long to walk amongst the noble saguaros and paint their portraits.  I feel a road trip is calling my name...I am giving myself one year!

Take a look at her latest...its worth a read...and then another.
